My Love For Clay. . .
I've been creating with clay since 1994 when I signed up for pottery classes at Chelsea Ceramic Guild in New York City. I've never considered myself "artistic" because I can't draw anything more than stick figures. But, everyone is creative in their own way. Some people are amazing cooks, some create in their gardens, some write poetry and others love photography. Don't let anyone tell you that you're not creative; and don't be afraid to try something new! I was over 30 when I took my first class!
I loved creating with clay right away, even though I was pretty much terrible! I had the hardest time learning how to center. Honestly! But, I was proud of myself for sticking with it because all my life I was used to being pretty good at something that I tried, like sports. Not pottery! It was very frustrating at times and it taught me patience.
The clay smells so good, like Mother Earth! Before I start throwing, I give the clay Reiki energy. This energy exchange connects me to the clay and I try to listen to it to see what it would like to become.
In these pictures, you'll find some of my latest pottery designs. I throw the mugs on the wheel but have been really getting into hand-building the bowls and dishes. I want them to be very WABI-SABI, natural feeling--not perfectly formed on the wheel. EARTHY!
All of my crop circle pottery is fired three times instead of the
standard 2 firings. After the bisque fire, I glaze my pots and fire them
to a high fire cone 5 for durability. Then, I add the decals that I've
printed in my laser printer. The iron oxide in the decal burns into the
pottery on the 3rd and final firing. This makes the decals permanent.
The designs will not come off in your dishwasher!
My pottery is
dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. Only food safe, non-toxic,
lead-free glazes are used.
Thank you so much for stopping by!
